Centaurs

I had an idea which started with my drawing the griffin for an Illustration Friday submission a few weeks back, and that was to draw other "legendary" creatures. So this got me started with the centaur, which happens to be my birth sign.

I didn't stop at the first one (left image) but drew a few more just to see where it would lead me. I guess one of the objectives with these drawings was to try to duplicate the energy and looseness I have in my sketchbook and do it in the context of a "final piece". Not really succeeding yet, but I like the feel of the last one: not cartoony but not high realism either. Still chugging on.

Question: Do your "finished pieces" look and feel anything like your sketchbook images?

IF: Subtract

A toughy theme. But here's my submission for this week's Illustration Friday topic of, "Subtract"… a bit of a stretch, but I think still in line with the theme.

EDM- my inner critic

I'm trying out Danny Gregory's Every Day Matters theme posting, much like Illustration Friday's weekly theme. So here's my inaugural image for his site.

IF: Legendary

It's my first IF submission in a few weeks. And as usual, it's a last minute submission which prompted me to depart from my traditional method of a tighter and more finished look and go with what I call, the "pen doodle" method. I kinda like it especially with the colour added.

sketchbook: 15/03/09

This is a drawing of Convocation Hall at the University of Toronto, my almamater.

I remember having my graduation ceremony there, pre-air condition, and sweating through the three hours it took to get through all the graduates. Fortunately, I was wearing, shorts, t-shirt and sandals underneath my gown.

I think I over did it on this spread.

So this is my 100th blog post… and it only took me three years to get here.
Hopefully the next 100 posts will be done in a shorter amount of time. Enjoy.

Dreams: "Alex's Closet"

There are mornings when I wake up and I will have remembered quite vividly, in random flash images of what I had dreamt during the night. This is one instance and I thought I would put it to paper. It's an image of my aikido teacher's closet with all his gis (the white pajamas) hanging in a row. Don't ask how I know it's his closet. I just know.

If any viewers out there can interpret dreams, and would like to enlighten me to the significance of this image (if any), please do. It would be most appreciated… and thanks in advance.

It' been a while because I exceeded my download/upload capacity for this past month and I would have been penalized if I had uploaded anything over the last few days. But, the slate is wiped clean, as they say, and here's a new spread from my sketchbook.

Zerlina's collage

Here's another typographic collage I just finished to give to my sister for her birthday.
Unfortunately, the wood chop of my last name didn't translate too well onto the watercolour paper. Will have to try some other way of putting it on.
