sketchbook

Trying to squeeze everything I can out of the Bloor Gladstone Library, in particular, the people. Thank you, my unsuspecting models... except for the sleeping subway guy.

sketchbook

I decided today to broaden my horizons and sketch at the Yorkville Library. It definitely has a different vibe from the Bloor Gladstone branch. One thing I noticed immediately was the toddler's sing along program that was happening as I was there. I would hear the lyrics (scribbled on the bottom of the page) sung by the librarian and the kids singing after her.

Sketchbook

Some after work sketching at one of my regular haunts. I chose to sit in a seat that would allow me to sketch anyone in front of me in profile… an ideal sketching position, I believe!

Urban Sketching, Toronto: T.D. Gallery of Inuit Art

I went with the Toronto Urban sketchers to the T.D. Inuit Art Museum. I didn't realize it existed, but it's tucked away in a quiet corner of the TD Tower. It was nice to be around liked minded people for a few hours.

sketchbook

Coffee at Tim Hortons. When I did this sketch of a homeless man, I felt quite conflicted. Normally, it's drawings of other customers. But he was not one, and he chose to take a nap at the table across from me. It felt like Iw as taking advantage of him.

Visiting my sister and her family in Milton. Her husband is a gamer and when he's on his laptop, he makes for a perfect model.

I returned to the Bloor Gladstone Library to do some sketching. It's getting cooler outside, so you'll be seeing more of these library sketches in the future.

Sketchbook

I returned to this same spot this afternoon to finish off the spread. It was a beautiful day to finish it on... a tad hot though. Toronto Harbourfront, Canada.

Figure drawing at the TSA

Another sketching session at the Toronto School of Art. I thought I'd continue doing the three hour pose as I did last week. However, tonight's model was a fidgeter and it was quite frustrating trying to get her down on paper. I actually found sketching one of my fellow sketchers to be more productive (the top page).

Fortunately, in the short pose room, there was an awesome model and she salvaged the night for me. I did this 20 min. sketch as the last one for the night. Apparently she'll be the long model pose next week.... I'm there!

sketching at Venezia Bakery

It's been a while since I've been to Venezia Bakery on Ossington. The last sketch of the Bakery can be seen here (WOW! that was 6 years ago!). It's one of the last few hold outs on this strip where posh, hipster cafes, bars and galleries have taken over. It's run by an older Portuguese couple and they have definitely made their presence known in the shop. The lady of the business is loud, shrill and friendly and talks to her Portuguese clientele without paying heed to how long the line up is… that's what her daughter is for. I loved it and actually got a pat on the back from her when I was drawing this. I'll be sure to visit again.

Figure Drawing at the TSA

I spent three wonderful hours sketching this model at the TSA open figure drawing class tonight. This is my second time drawing her and by far she is the best model I drawn at these sessions. Steady as a rock.

On a technical note, sketching a 3 hour pose in pen seemed a lot like painting with watercolours. Every move had to be planned in advance or else the drawing as a whole wouldn't look right. I think I'll live on the edge again next week.

Sketchbook - subway sleeping

I love to see people sleeping on the subway. More people should do it. It makes my sketching easier. Pass the word on , please.

sketchbook, the sleeping giant.

The sleeping giant (that's what I'll be doing when the ball drops). My last sketch for 2014.
Looking forward to what kind of new art I'll be up to in 2015.
All the best to my friends in the new year.

Subway sketching and one

After a week and a half of being under the weather and no desire to sketch, it was nice to get out  from under that cloud and put some ink on paper.

sketchbook: A bit of walking and a bit of drawing

I decided to walk west on Bloor. Just walk. I stopped off at the Runnymede Library for the first time and spent most of my time there. A lot of mucked spreads but I managed to salvage two, the two I've uploaded here. My next stop was to get a coffee and of course, some sketching. I was looking for a non franchise coffee house that had something that piqued my drawing interest. The Coffee Tree fit those criteria.

sketchbook- Bloor Gladstone Library revisited, for a thrid time... or maybe, fourth.

Another go to place for sketching, the Bloor Gladstone Library.

I came to a realization when I started sketching the photocopy machine: I start a details level and work my way out to bigger components. This could be said about how I start any drawing. For the most part it works for me, but the photocopy machine looks like disparate parts drawn side by side. I think I need to start on a large scale, and work down to the details. Broad strokes first.

sketchbook -- Simply Sundays, Tequila Bookworm

I spent two hours today with a group of like minded creatives at the Tequila Bookworm. Some sketched, others braided. It was nice to meet some new faces.
The main subject (I forgot her name) of this sketch was braiding, I think a wrist bracelet.

sketchbook - "Stan the Man #4"

A.K.A. my dad. Another installment in the Stan the Man series.

sketchbook- Bloor Gladstone Library

Some afetr work sketching at the Bloor Gladstone Library. Toronto has been hit with a cold spell for the last few days and there's only so many places along my toute back home that I could sketch in at. The B/G LIbrary is one of them.

sketchbook- a TTC day

I spent a lot of time on the TTC today. So I sketched.
