sketchbook 03/20/11

I have to apologize to Leilani. I drew her quite a few days ago and I promised I would upload to my blog that night after work. It totally slipped my mind until today when I made another promise to another customer I sketched below. Sorry Leilani, but here it is.

Here's the hot seat customer I sketched today. Cheryl is her name. A project manager by day and an aspiring writer by night, or in this case afternoon (bad father joke, but I like 'em a lot). She said my drawing made her look angry. I'd like to think of her expression as intense concentration... a look that she bares while writing the next Canadian classic.
Cheryl if you need an illustrator for any of your stories, give me a shout!

I've also noticed that I tend to get a likeliness with some, but others, I miss the mark entirely. Don't know why that is, but it was in this case. Nailed Leilani but Cheryl was a difficult model to capture accurately on paper. The quest continues.

sketchbook 05/03/10

I found out a few days ago that I was accepted to show and sell my art at the Sunnyside Art Show at the end of this month. I'm excited and nervous all at once! I know I don't have enough "finished" pieces yet so I've been going to coffee house almost on a daily basis to get some more of those studies down on paper. However, to give a bit more price point variety to the art hungry crowds (I hope) I've gone to a smaller scale and in pen. This is the first in a series of smaller, black and white "sketchbook" type pages up for sale as well.

I'll be cramming imagery and type onto one page and hopefully it'll strike a cord with people enough they'll want to buy one. The page measures 6x9 inches and when I display it, I think I'll take the spiral bind off and show each page with the holes. The pricing of this type of page eludes me. Any suggestions from people in the blogosphere who have exhibited in a similar venue would be appreciated.

Another Starbucks process spread.

This spread consists of a series of people who I've drawn over a period of three days during my meal breaks at Starbucks.

I forgot how enjoyable drawing with pencil can be. I think I'll stick with it for a bit.

sketchbook 01/10/09

I thought i'd sketch behind the counter of a Starbucks since I've spent so much time sketching things in front if it.

Sketchbook 08/08/09

After being away from my sketchbook for a week due to a summer cold, I finally got the chance to get back out there and do some sketching. However, mother nature wasn't cooperating with me and the cool weather and drizzle forced me inside to sketch another coffee shop. This is the Starbucks at College, just west of Bathurst and the size of this place makes it quite intimate. Literally people are a few feet away from me and that makes sketching, using the quick glance method, a challenge to being inconspicuous. However, I succeeded and here it is... After a 7 day hiatus, I felt my hand eye coordination a bit off, as it usually is after a few days of not drawing.

Sketchbook 01/06/09

Trying to pare down the amount of marks I'm putting on a sketch. Feels kinda naked to me now that I'm seeing the scanned image. Ohhh, well...The learning continues.
